Fired Department of Education employees clean out desks

On a somber Friday in Washington, hundreds of government employees who were recently laid off from the Department of Education gathered at the headquarters to collect their personal belongings and bid farewell to their colleagues.

What Happened at the Department of Education?

After being informed of their termination, the former employees were given a mere 30 minutes to gather their things before being escorted out of the building. The atmosphere was filled with a mix of emotions as people said their goodbyes and reflected on their time working for the department.

Why Were They Let Go?

Earlier this month, a significant portion of the department's staff received pink slips, resulting in a drastic reduction in the workforce. The total number of employees now stands at 2,183, a sharp decline from the 4,133 workers employed at the beginning of the year.

Protests and Support

Supporters and other federal workers, including some who still remain at the Education Department, gathered at the headquarters to protest against the layoffs. The cuts have sparked outrage and concern among those in the education sector and beyond.

Government Downsizing Efforts

The downsizing of the federal government has been a key objective of President Trump and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The recent layoffs at the Department of Education are part of a broader initiative to streamline government operations and reduce spending.
